About us

The Chair of Sustainable Construction at ETH Zurich intends to ground sustainability in the disciplines of the built environment.

We want to foster international collaboration among the different stakeholders involved in architecture, engineering and construction and to promote appropriate application of sustainable construction materials during the entire life cycle of buildings and infrastructure.

The Chair of Sustainable Construction seeks to educate students about the urgent issue facing our societies and the solutions that exist on global, local, individual or collective levels. To do so it applies the following three-prong approach:

  1. Equip students to use existing tools to assess sustainability in different construction projects.
  2. Develop critical thinking in regards to sustainability labels and criteria promoted in the mainstream construction sector.
  3. Showcase promising initiatives in term of appropriate use of resources and development of sustainable construction practices.

Our research is aligned along the following axes:

  • Identification of the relevant parameters that influence the environmental impacts of buildings and infrastructures at the international, national and regional levels
  • Quantification of the improvement potential for specific materials and structure during the various stages of their life cycle
  • Implementation of these sustainable practices throughout the proposition of innovative constructive techniques based on a detailed analysis of the technical, economic and socio-cultural situation
