Abstract
The adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in construction promise to enhance the sustainability of the sector, resulting from an improved efficiency, safety, productivity, etc. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to identify the sustainability opportunities and risks associated with the implementation of digital fabrication in construction. The research focuses on the environmental and productivity assessment of robotically fabricated building elements with a focus on the impact of materials, construction processes and waste. Based on the identified parameters, sustainable guidelines are formulated to support the integration of sustainable criteria in digitally fabricated architecture and to raise awareness of sustainability issues such as resource consumption. Furthermore, a design-integrated tool is developed to support the optimization of construction projects from early design stages. Finally, potential implications associated with the implementation of digital fabrication in the construction industry, such as changes in the construction organization and roles, are discussed.
