Welcome Ricardo Perez Restrepo

Ricardo joined the Chair of Sustainable Construction as PhD Student in January 2025.

Ricardo is a transdisciplinar urban practitioner with interest in delivering impactful solutions to underserved communities, especially in the Global South.

His academic background goes from Political Science (BSc from EAFIT University at Medellín, Colombia), passing through a master's degree in Building and Urban Design from the University College London. There, he gained extensive tools to understand the underlying socioeconomic and political webs that move around urban environments. His master's thesis proposed a framework to analyse urban regeneration projects through the environmental justice lens.

Ricardo has developed all his professional life at Medellín, where he has worked as research assistant at the Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies of EAFIT University, as well as for local private consultancies. Additionally, he is founder of La Otra Ciudad, a youth-led grassroots organization that co-designs public spaces with vulnerable communities and promotes an environment-centred political agenda (message from the editor: external page do check us up!).

Now, he comes to the Chair to pursue a PhD focusing on regenerative construction to increase the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate risk.

His main research interests include:
• Environmental Justice
• Critical Urban Theory
• Climate Adaptation in the Global South
• Alternative Housing Schemes
