Magda Posani at RILEM Spring Convention & Conference on Advanced Construction Materials and Processes for a Carbon Neutral Society

In April 2024, Magda Posani discussed the need for integrating moisture dynamics into architectural design workflow and introduced the new Grasshopper Plugin developed at the chair for Dynamic Hygrothermal Simulations - WaterSkater.

Low-carbon building materials, such as earth- and bio-based ones, often have an excellent capacity to regulate indoor moisture levels. Thanks to their hygroscopic nature, they can buffer moisture from the indoor environment, absorbing it when indoor humidity increases and releasing it when the interior air becomes drier. This moisture-buffering capacity can significantly improve the indoor comfort and well-being of the buildings’ users. The work presented at the conference investigates the possibility of incorporating moisture dynamics evaluation into the early stages of architectural design workflows using the Grasshopper interface of Rhinoceros – namely through the newly developed plugin WaterSkater.

The Conference on Advanced Construction Materials and Processes for a Carbon Neutral Society organized by Politecnico di Milano and RILEM was a great event. The audience was very responsive and interested in the potential of using moisture-buffering materials to improve indoor comfort and the well-being of building users!

The chair of Sustainable Construction intends to embed sustainability in all aspects of the built environment. For more information, please visit our website.
